DuckDuckGo search engine is very popular nowadays and is attracting thousands of visitors every day. Being a small website owner, I’m always looking for new ways to bring traffic to my sites and one way of doing that is getting them indexed in the different search engines, like Google, Bing, Yahoo and why not DuckDuckGo, so today I want to share with you the steps to get indexed in DuckDuckGo.
What is DuckDuckGo?
DuckDuckGo is a search engine which, unlike others, don’t collect or share any of your personal information, they don’t store your search history, they don’t track any of your activity.
DuckDuckGo is an Internet privacy company that empowers you to seamlessly take control of your personal information online, without any tradeoffs. With our roots as the search engine that doesn’t track you, we’ve expanded what we do to protect you no matter where the Internet takes you. Source: duckduckgo.com
The amount of direct queries have increased dramatically since they started. Approximately 25 millions searches are made in DuckDuckGo every single day!
They have reached 133,371,061 direct queries just in the first week of 2019! That is a lot of traffic we shouldn’t ignore and a great opportunity to generate quality traffic toward your website.
How to get indexed in DuckDuckGo
DuckDuck doesn’t have a webmaster tools where you can submit your site, instead, it uses over 400 sources including DuckDuckGoBot, Wikipedia, Quora, Reddit, Yahoo, Bing among others to get the results of each search and if your site is already indexed in Bing and Yahoo, then most probably it will be indexed in DuckDuckGo as well, but let’s check…
The first thing you need to do open DuckDuckGo homepage and write site:yourdomain and click enter.
If your site is indexed, then you will see it in the search results and you don’t need to do anything else.
If your site doesn’t appear in the results, then there is a trick to get it indexed faster instead of waiting for other sources, keep reading!
Yandex Webmaster Tools
According to Wikipedia, Yandex is the the largest search engine on the internet in Russia and is the 5th largest search engine worldwide. DuckDuckGo have a strong relationship with Yandex and therefore indexing your site there will help you to get indexed in DuckDuckGo.
To start, go to Yandex Webmaster Tools and create a new account for free.
Once inside, add your site using the yellow button:
Enter your domain and click Add:
You will need to verify the ownership of your website. The easiest way, at least for me, is using Meta Tag. Copy the full code from < to > and do not close Yandex’s window because you need to come back later.
Log in to your WordPress site, go to Appearance -> Editor and look for the file Theme Header (header.php) and open it.
Now, in the code editor part, look for </head> and paste the code from Yandex Webmaster just before it:
Don’t forget to Update File!
Go back to Yandex Webmaster window and click on Check. If everything when well, you will see your site under the box list on the top right.
And last but not least, you need to add your sitemap so all the pages/post from your site get indexed. You can do that by going to Indexing -> Sitemap files and adding the link to your website sitemap.
It will take some time before Yandex’s crawl bots do their work so you will have to wait. It can take up two weeks, but check again in a couple of days, maybe they do it faster.
– Update 2019-01-14 –
After 5 days of submitting my site to Yandex Webmaster, I can see that crawling bots has started to index it and even got some recommendations to fix and improve some pages.
One possible problem that Yandex detected was this:
“The <description> meta tag is either missing or incorrectly filled out on a number of pages. This could negatively affect how your site is presented in search results.”
When checking which pages are missing description I can see that most of them were TAG pages, so I went and updated the descriptions on some of the most used tags and after a day, those disappeared from the list and were indexed, yay!!
There were also some recommendations about how to fix these possible indexing issues:
- Site has not been registered in Yandex Business Directory. Solution: Set targeting Region under Site Information.
- No site geographic affliation given. Solution: Set targeting Region under Site Information.
- Favicon file not found. Solution: Place an favicon image file of 16×16 pixels in the root directory of the site.
I will keep checking now and then if new issues appears and share the solutions with you!
– End of Update –
Now you will get more traffic to your website from DuckDuckGo and Yandex!
